Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Theatrical Wardrobe / Costume Dresser to join our dynamic backstage team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the flawless execution of costume changes and maintenance for all performances at the Alex Theatre. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses meticulous attention to detail, and has a strong understanding of theatrical production demands. You will work closely with performers, designers, and the production team to bring artistic visions to life on stage, ensuring costumes are always show-ready.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute quick changes for performers during live performances with precision and efficiency.
- Assist performers with the dressing and undressing of costumes, ensuring proper fit and comfort.
- Organize and maintain costume racks, dressing rooms, and backstage areas.
- Perform basic costume repairs, alterations, and laundry as needed during and between shows.
- Pre-set costumes and accessories for each performance according to the show's requirements.
- Collaborate effectively with the Costume Designer, Wardrobe Supervisor, and other crew members.
- Monitor the condition of costumes throughout the run of a show and report any issues.
- Adhere to strict show schedules and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a theatrical dresser or costume assistant in a professional setting.
- Excellent hand-sewing and basic machine-sewing skills for quick repairs.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress, live performance environment.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a keen eye for aesthetics.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially when working with performers.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by performance schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or certificate in Costume Design, Theatre Arts, or a related field.
- Experience with various types of theatrical costumes, including period wear and specialized garments.
- Familiarity with laundry and dry-cleaning procedures for delicate fabrics.
- Knowledge of theatrical protocols and etiquette.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
