Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and talented Church Organist / Music Director to lead our weekend worship services. This stable part-time role is crucial to our music ministry, providing inspiring musical accompaniment and direction for our congregation. The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation for sacred music, proficiency in organ and piano, and the ability to direct our choir. This position offers a wonderful opportunity to contribute significantly to the spiritual life of our church community through the power of music. The role primarily focuses on weekend services and includes preparation time during the week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as principal organist and pianist for all weekend worship services (Sunday mornings and occasional special services).
  • Direct the adult choir, including selecting anthems, leading rehearsals, and preparing them for worship.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and worship team to plan and coordinate music selections that align with lectionary readings and sermon themes.
  • Provide musical accompaniment for weddings, funerals, and other special church events as required (additional compensation may apply).
  • Maintain the church's organ and pianos in good working order, arranging for tuning and maintenance as needed.
  • Oversee the church's music library, ensuring proper organization and care of sheet music and other resources.
  • Recruit, encourage, and develop musical talent within the congregation.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and worship planning sessions.
  • Prepare service music, including preludes, offertories, postludes, hymns, and other liturgical elements.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in playing the organ and piano for worship services.
  • Strong conducting skills for leading a choir.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Christian hymnody and sacred music literature.
  • Ability to read music and sight-read.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational skills for managing music resources and rehearsal schedules.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the church.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Sacred Music, Organ Performance, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a Church Organist or Music Director in a Protestant tradition.
  • Experience with various styles of church music, from traditional to contemporary.
  • Ability to arrange music for different instrumental and vocal combinations.
  • Experience with music software (e.g., notation programs).
