Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Recreational Therapy Intern to join our rehabilitation team in Colchester. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic healthcare setting, working alongside experienced therapists to develop and implement therapeutic recreation programs for patients recovering from various conditions. The intern will support activities designed to improve physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning, contributing directly to patient well-being and recovery journeys.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Recreational Therapists in planning, organizing, and leading individual and group recreational activities.
  • Observe and participate in patient assessments to understand their needs, interests, and functional levels.
  • Help adapt activities and equipment to meet the diverse needs of patients with varying abilities.
  • Document patient participation and progress, adhering to clinical guidelines and confidentiality protocols.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of a safe, engaging, and therapeutic environment.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists.
  • Learn to identify community resources and integrate them into discharge planning for continued recreational engagement.
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and in-service training sessions.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Empathy, patience, and a genuine interest in working with diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of therapeutic recreation principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or work experience in a healthcare, rehabilitation, or community recreation setting.
  • Familiarity with various recreational modalities (e.g., arts and crafts, music, adaptive sports).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
