Job Description

Appen is seeking a highly culturally aware and detail-oriented Dialect & Slang Annotator to join our team in North York. In this role, you will be instrumental in enhancing the accuracy and naturalness of AI language models by providing expert annotation of regional dialects, slang, idiomatic expressions, and culturally specific nuances. Your deep understanding of local Canadian culture and language variations will directly contribute to making AI systems more intelligent, inclusive, and globally relevant. Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and annotate text, audio, and video data for dialectal variations, slang, and colloquialisms specific to Canadian English and potentially other local languages/dialects.
  • Identify and label idiomatic expressions, cultural references, and socio-linguistic patterns.
  • Provide detailed contextual explanations for annotations to ensure clarity and accuracy for machine learning training.
  • Collaborate with linguistic and project teams to refine annotation guidelines and processes.
  • Maintain high levels of accuracy and consistency in data labeling according to project specifications.
  • Participate in quality assurance reviews and provide feedback on annotated datasets.
  • Stay updated on evolving linguistic trends and cultural shifts in the assigned region.

Required Skills

  • Native or near-native fluency in Canadian English, with a deep understanding of its regional dialects and slang.
  • Exceptional cultural awareness and knowledge of Canadian social norms, references, and pop culture.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for precise data annotation.
  • Ability to follow complex guidelines and adapt to changing project requirements.
  • Proficiency in using web-based annotation tools (training will be provided).
  • Excellent written communication skills in English.
  • Strong self-motivation and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in linguistics, translation, localization, content moderation, or data annotation.
  • Academic background in linguistics, anthropology, cultural studies, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with linguistic annotation principles and terminology.
  • Experience with various digital communication platforms and social media.
