Job Description
We are seeking highly skilled and certified Virtual ASL / Sign Language Interpreters to join our remote Video Relay Service (VRS) team. In this pivotal role, you will facilitate seamless communication between Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing individuals using American Sign Language (ASL) via video. Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, real-time ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpretation via video relay service.
- Maintain strict adherence to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant ethical guidelines.
- Manage call queues efficiently, maintaining productivity standards and response times.
- Ensure proper setup and functionality of video interpreting equipment and technology.
- Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to enhance overall service quality and interpreter development.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to maintain certification and improve skills.
Required Skills
- RID/NAD certification (or equivalent state/national certification in the UK, such as NRCDP, SASLI, etc.).
- Exceptional fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.
- Proven experience in video relay service (VRS) or similar interpreting environments.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Strong ethical conduct and unwavering commitment to professionalism and confidentiality.
- Reliable high-speed internet connection and a quiet, professional home workspace.
- Proficiency in using video conferencing software and basic computer troubleshooting skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Interpreting, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
- Specialization or experience in legal, medical, or technical interpreting settings.
- Familiarity with various video conferencing platforms and interpreting technologies.
- Additional sign language certifications or fluency in other signed languages (e.g., BSL).
- Previous experience working in a fully remote or virtual team environment.
