Job Description

Novartis is seeking a highly skilled and visionary Chemistry Project Lead to spearhead critical pharmaceutical development initiatives. This strategic role is central to our R&D pipeline, driving the design, execution, and oversight of complex chemical synthesis projects from concept to commercialization. The successful candidate will be a seasoned expert in medicinal chemistry or process chemistry, capable of leading cross-functional teams, managing budgets, and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all phases of chemistry projects, including experimental design, execution, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for chemical development, ensuring alignment with overall R&D objectives and business goals.
  • Oversee project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation to ensure efficient project delivery.
  • Mentor and guide junior chemists and research scientists, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate extensively with cross-functional teams including biology, pharmacology, formulations, and regulatory affairs.
  • Ensure all project activities comply with internal quality standards, industry best practices, and global regulatory requirements (e.g., cGMP).
  • Identify and mitigate project risks, proactively developing contingency plans.
  • Present project updates, findings, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and external partners.

Required Skills

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in pharmaceutical R&D, with a strong focus on synthetic organic chemistry or process development.
  • Demonstrated project leadership experience within a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting.
  • Deep understanding of cGMP principles and regulatory guidelines relevant to drug development.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of leading and influencing diverse teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMP certification or equivalent project management training.
  • Experience with outsourced R&D activities and Contract Research Organizations (CROs).
  • Proficiency in chemical drawing software and ELN systems.
  • Track record of scientific publications and patent contributions.
