Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Forensic Analyst to join our dedicated team in Manhattan, New York. This critical role focuses on supporting state crime lab initiatives by performing advanced forensic analysis, interpreting complex data, and providing expert testimony. The successful candidate will lead projects, mentor junior analysts, and contribute to the development and validation of new analytical methods. You will be instrumental in processing evidence from a variety of cases, ensuring the highest standards of scientific integrity and chain of custody are maintained. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead complex forensic analyses across various disciplines, including but not limited to toxicology, DNA, trace evidence, or firearms.
  • Manage case assignments, prioritize workload, and ensure timely completion of analyses in accordance with state crime lab protocols and quality standards.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methodologies and instrumentation, ensuring compliance with ISO 17025 guidelines.
  • Provide expert interpretation of analytical results and generate comprehensive, defensible forensic reports.
  • Serve as an expert witness in court, providing clear and concise testimony regarding analytical findings and methodologies.
  • Mentor and train junior forensic analysts, fostering their professional growth and ensuring adherence to best practices.
  • Perform quality control checks, instrument maintenance, and troubleshoot analytical issues.
  • Maintain meticulous chain of custody for all evidence and ensure proper documentation of all procedures.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and continuous professional development activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with law enforcement agencies, legal professionals, and other forensic specialists.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a forensic laboratory, preferably with a focus on state crime lab operations.
  • Proven expertise in one or more forensic disciplines (e.g., DNA analysis, toxicology, trace evidence, ballistics).
  • Strong understanding of forensic accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 17025, ASCLD/LAB).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and validate analytical methods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in report writing and public speaking (expert testimony).
  • Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation relevant to the specific forensic discipline.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Certification by a recognized forensic accreditation board (e.g., ABC, ABFT).
  • Experience in project management or lead roles within a forensic setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
