Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Theatrical Wardrobe / Costume Dresser to join our dynamic backstage team. This is a fast-paced, hands-on role perfect for someone with a passion for live theatre and a keen eye for detail. You will be instrumental in ensuring that all performers are impeccably dressed and prepared for their cues, often under tight deadlines and with rapid changes. This on-site position requires someone who can thrive in an energetic environment, anticipate needs, and maintain costume integrity throughout demanding performance schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute quick changes for performers during live productions, ensuring seamless transitions.
- Organize and maintain costume racks, dressing rooms, and backstage areas.
- Perform minor repairs, alterations, and pressing of costumes as needed before, during, and after performances.
- Assist performers with costume elements, including wigs, makeup, and accessories.
- Launder, dry clean, and care for costumes according to specific fabric requirements and show needs.
- Collaborate closely with the Wardrobe Supervisor, Stage Management, and performers to ensure all costume-related needs are met.
- Attend technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances as scheduled.
- Maintain inventory and report any missing or damaged costume pieces.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a theatrical dresser or in a similar fast-paced costume role.
- Proficiency in basic hand and machine sewing techniques for quick repairs.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially with performers and production staff.
- Ability to anticipate needs and problem-solve in real-time.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift costume trunks, and navigate backstage environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training in theatrical costuming, fashion design, or a related field.
- Experience with a variety of costume styles, fabrics, and periods.
- Familiarity with backstage protocols and theatrical terminology.
- Knowledge of costume care and preservation techniques.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
