Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Fossil Science Assistant to join our research team. This role provides essential support for ongoing paleontological research projects, contributing to the discovery, preservation, and study of fossil specimens. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, researchers, and students, engaging in a variety of tasks both in the laboratory and potentially in the field. Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation, cleaning, and conservation of fossil specimens using established laboratory techniques.
- Maintain and update fossil specimen databases, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.
- Support logistical planning and participate in field expeditions for fossil collection, as required.
- Perform basic laboratory tasks, including equipment maintenance and inventory management.
- Assist in the organization and curation of fossil collections.
- Prepare preliminary reports, presentations, and educational materials related to research findings.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and best practices in the laboratory and field environments.
Required Skills
- Strong interest and foundational knowledge in paleontology, geology, or related earth sciences.
- Excellent attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping abilities.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to follow precise instructions and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Physical ability to handle specimens, lift moderate weights, and participate in field activities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Earth System Science, Geology, Biology, or a closely related field.
- Previous experience working in a museum, academic laboratory, or field research setting.
- Familiarity with specific fossil preparation techniques (e.g., microfossil extraction, mechanical preparation).
- Experience with database management systems or GIS software.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field work.
