Job Description

As a Hospital Admitting Nurse at Dignity Health, you will play a crucial dual role, bridging administrative efficiency with essential clinical assessment at the point of patient admission. This position is vital for ensuring a smooth, welcoming, and clinically appropriate start to every patient’s care journey. You will be responsible for obtaining comprehensive patient information, conducting initial health screenings, explaining hospital policies, and preparing patients for their inpatient or outpatient procedures, all while maintaining a calm and empathetic demeanor. This role requires a blend of clinical expertise, administrative precision, and excellent interpersonal skills to positively impact patient experience from their very first interaction with our facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough patient interviews to gather medical history, demographic, and insurance information.
  • Perform initial clinical assessments, including vital signs, basic physical assessment, and review of presenting symptoms.
  • Identify and document patient allergies, current medications, and pre-existing conditions accurately.
  • Ensure all necessary admission paperwork is completed accurately and efficiently according to hospital policy.
  • Educate patients and their families about hospital procedures, patient rights, and care plans in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate timely patient placement and care coordination.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and adhere to all HIPAA regulations and ethical standards.
  • Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems for accurate data entry, retrieval, and documentation.
  • Address patient and family concerns with empathy and provide clear, concise information and support.
  • Assist with bed assignments and coordinate with patient transport as needed to optimize patient flow.

Required Skills

  • Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Proficiency in conducting comprehensive patient assessments and clinical screenings.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities and capacity for multitasking in a dynamic environment.
  • Competency with electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Experience specifically in an admitting, emergency department, or urgent care setting.
  • Proficiency with Epic EHR system.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills to better serve our diverse patient population.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
