Job Description
Join Island Health as a Counseling & Therapy Intern for a supervised practicum experience. This role offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience under the guidance of experienced, registered professionals. You will contribute to providing essential mental health support to clients within a diverse community setting, participating in assessments, treatment planning, and direct client care. This practicum is designed to meet the requirements for academic programs in counseling, psychology, social work, or related fields, offering a supportive environment for professional growth and skill development.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct initial client assessments and intake interviews under supervision.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with supervisors and clients.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions, utilizing various therapeutic modalities.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and progress notes in compliance with ethical and legal standards.
- Participate actively in regular clinical supervision, case conferences, and team meetings.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of psychoeducational workshops or support groups.
- Adhere to all professional ethical guidelines and organizational policies.
- Engage in continuous learning and professional development activities.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral program in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field.
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge of counseling theories and therapeutic techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Strong empathy, active listening, and rapport-building abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Commitment to ethical practice and client confidentiality.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or observational experience in a mental health setting.
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
