Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Brewing Chemist with a strong focus on Beverage Science to join our innovative Quality Assurance team in La Jolla. In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the consistent quality and flavor profile of our diverse range of craft beverages. You will perform critical laboratory analyses, contribute to product development, and play a key role in maintaining our high standards from raw materials to finished product. This is an exciting opportunity for a chemist who loves to blend scientific rigor with a passion for brewing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and non-routine chemical analyses on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products (beer, hard seltzers, non-alcoholic beverages) using various analytical techniques.
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment including spectrophotometers, pH meters, dissolved oxygen meters, HPLC, and GC-MS.
  • Conduct sensory evaluation and participate in sensory panels to assess product quality and identify off-flavors.
  • Develop and validate new analytical methods and procedures to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Monitor fermentation kinetics and other key brewing process parameters, providing data-driven insights to production teams.
  • Troubleshoot quality deviations and collaborate with brewing and packaging teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of all analyses, data, and experimental results.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in the laboratory.
  • Contribute to research and development projects related to new ingredients, processes, and product innovations.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a chemistry laboratory, preferably in a beverage, food, or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in analytical chemistry techniques including chromatography (HPLC, GC), spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and wet chemistry.
  • Strong understanding of brewing science, fermentation, and beverage stability.
  • Experience with sensory evaluation techniques and participation in sensory panels.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Brewing Science, Food Science, or Analytical Chemistry.
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software.
  • Familiarity with ASBC (American Society of Brewing Chemists) or MBAA (Master Brewers Association of America) analytical methods.
  • Previous experience in a craft brewery or beverage production setting.
  • Certified Beer Server or Cicerone certification.
