Job Description
St. Mary Catholic Church is seeking a dedicated and experienced Church Organist and Music Director for a stable weekend role. This vital position is responsible for providing organ and piano accompaniment for all weekend liturgies, directing our volunteer choir, and collaborating with pastoral staff to select appropriate music that enhances our worship services. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Catholic liturgy and a passion for sacred music, contributing to the spiritual life of our parish community.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as principal organist and pianist for all weekend Masses (Saturday evening, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening).
- Direct the adult volunteer choir, including weekly rehearsals and performance at designated liturgies.
- Collaborate with the pastor and other liturgical ministers to plan and select music appropriate for each liturgical season and specific services.
- Prepare and lead congregational singing, fostering active participation.
- Maintain the church's musical instruments, coordinating tuning and repairs as needed.
- Recruit, train, and mentor new choir members and cantors.
- Oversee the parish music library, ensuring proper organization and maintenance.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in playing the organ and piano, with experience in a liturgical setting.
- Strong choral conducting skills and experience directing volunteer choirs.
- Thorough knowledge of Catholic liturgy and sacred music repertoire.
- Ability to read music and improvise.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music, Sacred Music, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Church Organist or Music Director in a Catholic parish.
- Experience with various styles of sacred music.
- Familiarity with contemporary worship music in addition to traditional hymns.
