Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Collections Technician with a strong focus on Vertebrate Paleontology to join our team. This stable, full-time position will play a crucial role in the management, preservation, and accessibility of our vertebrate paleontological collections. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from specimen preparation and curation to database management and supporting research activities. This is an on-site role that requires a hands-on approach to working with sensitive and valuable specimens. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, stabilize, and curate vertebrate fossil specimens according to established protocols.
- Maintain and update specimen databases, ensuring accuracy and completeness of collection data.
- Assist with the integration of new acquisitions into the collection, including cataloging and proper storage.
- Monitor environmental conditions within collection storage areas to ensure specimen preservation.
- Conduct inventories and assist with loan requests, ensuring proper documentation and handling.
- Provide technical support for research projects utilizing the vertebrate paleontology collection.
- Assist in the training and supervision of student volunteers and interns.
- Perform routine maintenance and organization of collection facilities and equipment.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and best practices for handling paleontological specimens and laboratory materials.
- Contribute to outreach and educational programs related to the collection, as needed.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience in vertebrate fossil preparation and conservation techniques.
- Proficiency with museum collection databases (e.g., Specify, Arctos) or similar data management systems.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research-oriented environment.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Physical ability to lift up to 40 lbs and perform tasks requiring dexterity and prolonged standing/sitting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or related field.
- Prior experience working in a natural history museum or university collections environment.
- Knowledge of fossil photography and imaging techniques.
- Experience with GIS software for locality data management.
- Familiarity with relevant health and safety protocols for laboratory and collection spaces.
