Job Description
Are you passionate about working with animals and contributing to a greener community? The Greater Newark Conservancy is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Entry-Level Farm Hand to join our team in Newark. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in urban agriculture, learn about sustainable farming practices, and directly impact the well-being of our farm animals and the local environment. No prior experience is required – we are looking for individuals eager to learn, willing to work hard, and who have a genuine love for animals and outdoor work. You will be an integral part of our daily farm operations, supporting our mission to create a vibrant and healthy Newark.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily feeding, watering, and general care of farm animals (e.g., chickens, goats, rabbits).
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures, ensuring a hygienic and safe environment.
- Support basic animal health checks and report any concerns to the farm manager.
- Participate in planting, cultivating, and harvesting various crops.
- Help with weeding, watering, and pest management in garden beds.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of farm tools, equipment, and storage areas.
- Assist with minor repairs and general upkeep of farm infrastructure.
- Support community engagement activities and educational programs as needed.
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines for working with animals and farm equipment.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions (hot, cold, rain).
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Genuine interest in animal welfare and sustainable agriculture.
- Positive attitude and a desire to learn new skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior volunteer experience with animals or gardening.
- Basic understanding of animal behavior or plant care.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license.
