Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Florida Fossil Investigator with a specialized focus on Plio-Pleistocene faunas to join our dynamic environmental consulting team. This role is crucial for our ongoing projects involving paleontological resource assessments, mitigation, and research throughout Florida. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field surveys, performing excavations, identifying and documenting fossil specimens, and preparing comprehensive scientific reports. This position requires a deep understanding of Florida’s geological history and Plio-Pleistocene megafauna and microfauna, as well as proficiency in field methodologies and laboratory analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute paleontological field surveys and excavations across diverse Florida landscapes.
- Identify, collect, and meticulously document Plio-Pleistocene fossil specimens in accordance with established scientific protocols.
- Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all collected specimens and localities.
- Conduct preliminary laboratory analysis and preparation of fossil materials.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, site forms, and scientific presentations summarizing findings.
- Ensure all fieldwork and documentation adhere to relevant state and federal regulations (e.g., Florida Paleontological Resource Management Act).
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams including geologists, environmental scientists, and project managers.
- Contribute to permit applications and environmental impact assessments related to paleontological resources.
Required Skills
- Demonstrable expertise in Plio-Pleistocene vertebrate and invertebrate paleontology.
- Proficiency in paleontological field survey and excavation techniques.
- Strong ability to identify Florida-specific Plio-Pleistocene fossil assemblages.
- Excellent data collection, organization, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in technical report writing and scientific communication.
- Familiarity with GIS software for mapping and data management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various field conditions.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively within Florida.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological consulting or research, with a focus on Florida's Plio-Pleistocene epoch.
- Published research or presentations related to Florida paleontology.
- Experience with state and federal permitting processes concerning paleontological resources.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
