Job Description
Join the United States Forest Service as a Paleontology Technician and embark on an exciting outdoor career path. This role is crucial for the discovery, documentation, and preservation of paleontological resources on national forest lands. You will work primarily in the field, conducting surveys, excavating fossils, and contributing to the scientific understanding of past life on Earth. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct systematic paleontological surveys and inventories across designated national forest lands.
- Locate, identify, and document paleontological sites and fossil specimens, adhering to federal guidelines.
- Perform controlled excavations for the recovery of fossil materials, ensuring proper collection and stabilization techniques.
- Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all collected specimens and sites.
- Prepare preliminary fossil identifications and assist with specimen cataloging and curation.
- Operate and maintain field equipment, including vehicles, mapping devices, and excavation tools.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental regulations during field operations.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations on paleontological findings.
- Engage with the public and provide educational information regarding paleontological resources when appropriate.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varied terrain and weather conditions.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail for identifying fossils and features.
- Basic knowledge of geology, paleontology, or archaeology principles.
- Proficiency in using GPS devices and basic mapping tools.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or certificate in paleontology, geology, archaeology, natural resource management, or a related scientific field.
- Previous experience in field-based data collection or archaeological/paleontological survey.
- Experience with federal land management agencies (e.g., Forest Service, NPS, BLM).
- Familiarity with GIS software for data management and analysis.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
