Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Jazz Band Instructor to lead our high school jazz ensemble during evening rehearsals. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity to inspire young musicians, cultivate their jazz performance skills, and prepare them for various school and community performances. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in jazz music, excellent instructional abilities, and a commitment to fostering a positive and engaging learning atmosphere for our students.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead engaging evening rehearsals for the high school jazz band.
- Select appropriate repertoire that challenges and inspires students, covering various jazz styles and traditions.
- Provide individualized and group instruction on instrumental technique, improvisation, and music theory within the jazz idiom.
- Prepare the jazz band for performances at school concerts, festivals, and community events.
- Collaborate with other music department staff to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive music program.
- Foster a disciplined yet encouraging environment that promotes student growth, teamwork, and a love for jazz music.
- Manage instrument inventory and ensure proper care and maintenance during rehearsals.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in jazz performance and improvisation on a primary instrument.
- Strong understanding of jazz history, theory, and diverse stylistic practices.
- Proven experience in conducting and leading instrumental ensembles, preferably at the high school level.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and connect with teenage students.
- Ability to read and interpret complex musical scores, including lead sheets and big band arrangements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
- Prior experience as a jazz band director or assistant director in a school setting.
- Familiarity with the Illinois music education standards.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and adapting instructional methods to meet varied learning needs.
