Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly skilled High School Orchestra Teacher to inspire and educate our talented students. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the high school orchestra program, cultivating musical talent, and preparing students for various performances and competitions. This role requires a passion for music, strong instructional abilities, and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive orchestra curriculum aligned with state and national music education standards.
- Conduct rehearsals for various high school orchestra ensembles, including full orchestra, chamber groups, and sectional practices.
- Prepare students for public performances, concerts, festivals, and competitions throughout the academic year.
- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to support their musical growth and technical development.
- Manage and maintain orchestral instruments, sheet music, and other departmental resources.
- Collaborate with other music educators and school staff to integrate the orchestra program within the broader school community.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and upcoming events.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge of orchestral music.
- Organize and oversee fundraising activities for the orchestra program as needed.
Required Skills
- Expertise in orchestral conducting techniques and pedagogy.
- Proficiency in playing at least one orchestral string instrument.
- Strong knowledge of orchestral repertoire across various periods and styles.
- Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field.
- South Dakota Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for reciprocity).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Music Performance, Music Education, or Orchestral Conducting.
- Prior experience teaching and conducting high school-level orchestras.
- Experience with music technology and software relevant to orchestral instruction.
- A demonstrated track record of successful student performances and achievements.
- Ability to arrange or compose music for student ensembles.
