Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Ichthyology & Aquarium Maintenance Intern to join our aquatic research team at the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School. This on-site internship offers an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience in the care, maintenance, and study of diverse aquatic ecosystems and their inhabitants. The intern will work closely with faculty and staff, assisting with daily operations of research aquariums, contributing to ongoing ichthyological projects, and learning best practices in aquatic husbandry and conservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily care and feeding of various fish species and other aquatic organisms in research aquariums.
  • Conduct routine water quality testing and maintain accurate records.
  • Clean and maintain aquarium systems, including filters, tanks, and associated equipment.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of experimental tanks and equipment.
  • Monitor fish health and behavior, reporting any anomalies to supervisors.
  • Aid in the collection and analysis of ichthyological data.
  • Participate in habitat enrichment and environmental management for aquatic exhibits.
  • Learn and adhere to all safety protocols and animal welfare guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of biology or environmental science principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, and reaching.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a degree program related to Ichthyology, Marine Biology, Zoology, Aquatic Science, or Environmental Science.
  • Previous experience with aquarium keeping or animal care.
  • Familiarity with water quality testing procedures.
  • Interest in fish behavior, ecology, and conservation.
