Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and responsible Marina Garbage Boat Operator to join our environmental services team in Fort Lauderdale, FL. In this role, you will be responsible for operating a specialized vessel to effectively skim and remove debris, trash, and pollutants from marina waters, canals, and designated waterways. This position is critical to preserving the beauty and ecological health of Fort Lauderdale’s renowned aquatic environments. You will ensure the safe operation of the boat and equipment, adhere to all environmental regulations, and contribute to our mission of sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized garbage skimming boats safely and efficiently in various marina and waterway conditions.
  • Identify, collect, and remove floating debris, trash, plastics, and other pollutants from designated areas.
  • Perform routine pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vessel and equipment, including checks of engines, pumps, and collection mechanisms.
  • Conduct basic maintenance and minor repairs on equipment as needed.
  • Properly sort and dispose of collected waste materials at designated transfer stations.
  • Maintain accurate logs of areas cleaned, types and quantities of debris collected, and operational hours.
  • Adhere strictly to all marine safety regulations, environmental protection guidelines, and company policies.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and marina staff.
  • Respond to emergency spill clean-up requests as required.
  • Ensure the boat and equipment are clean and well-maintained at all times.

Required Skills

  • Valid US Coast Guard Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license or equivalent experience operating small commercial vessels.
  • Proven experience (minimum 1 year) in boat operation, preferably in a marine or industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of marine safety protocols and navigation rules.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for routine equipment checks and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent observational skills to identify debris and potential hazards.
  • Commitment to environmental stewardship and safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with waste collection or environmental clean-up operations.
  • Knowledge of local waterways and environmental regulations in Fort Lauderdale.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
