Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex laboratory tests and analyses on patient samples (e.g., blood, tissue, bodily fluids) across various disciplines, including haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide range of laboratory equipment and instrumentation, ensuring optimal performance and accuracy.
  • Conduct quality control procedures, calibrate instruments, and maintain accurate records to ensure compliance with quality assurance standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Interpret and validate laboratory results, communicating critical findings to clinical staff in a timely and professional manner.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, adhering to all health and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, clinicians, nurses, and other laboratory personnel to support patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Contribute to the training and mentorship of junior staff and students, as required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in all aspects of work.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to stay abreast of advancements in medical technology and laboratory science.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP or equivalent international certification (e.g., HCPC registration in the UK).
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-certification experience working in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in performing a broad range of laboratory tests and operating sophisticated analytical equipment.
  • Strong understanding of quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and ethical practices.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and evolving laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Specialist certification in a specific laboratory discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Hematology).
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and electronic health records.
  • Familiarity with UK NHS laboratory standards and practices.
  • Experience in a teaching hospital or large acute care setting.
