Job Description

REI in Bend, OR, is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Outdoor & Camping Gear Outfitter to join our retail sales team. This role is perfect for someone who thrives on customer interaction, has a deep understanding of camping, hiking, and outdoor equipment, and is eager to share their expertise. You’ll be instrumental in guiding customers to the perfect gear, ensuring they leave our store confident and prepared for their next outdoor excursion. Key Responsibilities
- Engage customers with exceptional service, identifying their outdoor needs and recommending appropriate gear and apparel.
- Provide expert advice on a wide range of outdoor products, including camping equipment, backpacking essentials, hiking gear, and outdoor clothing.
- Educate customers on product features, benefits, and proper usage to enhance their outdoor experiences.
- Process sales transactions accurately and efficiently, including returns and exchanges.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing sales floor, ensuring products are well-stocked and merchandised.
- Stay current with new product innovations, industry trends, and outdoor safety practices.
- Assist with inventory management, including receiving, pricing, and organizing merchandise.
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all customers and colleagues.
- Actively participate in ongoing training and product knowledge sessions.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in retail sales or customer service.
- Demonstrable passion for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, backpacking, and climbing.
- Solid knowledge of outdoor gear, apparel, and equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented retail environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a customer-centric approach.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn point-of-sale (POS) systems.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working for an outdoor recreation brand or specialty retail store.
- Certifications or formal training in outdoor recreation, wilderness first aid, or related fields.
- Familiarity with the local outdoor recreation areas and trails in Central Oregon.
- Experience with visual merchandising and store display best practices.
