Job Description
Are you passionate about art, particularly painting and sculpture? Do you aspire to work behind the scenes in a dynamic studio environment, contributing to the creation and preservation of artistic works? Museums Sheffield is offering an exciting Painting & Sculpture Studio Internship, providing a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience within a leading cultural institution. This On-site internship is designed for individuals eager to learn the foundational aspects of studio management, material preparation, and artistic assistance, working alongside experienced artists and conservators. You will be immersed in the daily operations of a vibrant studio, supporting various projects from concept to completion and contributing to the rich artistic tapestry of our galleries.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist resident artists and conservators with daily studio tasks, including material preparation, organization, and clean-up.
- Learn and apply safe handling practices for art materials and studio equipment.
- Support the preparation of canvases, stretching, and priming for painting projects.
- Aid in the casting, molding, and finishing processes for sculptural works.
- Organize and maintain studio inventory, ensuring all supplies are adequately stocked.
- Document studio processes and project progress, including photographic records.
- Assist with the installation and de-installation of artworks within exhibition spaces, under supervision.
- Research and compile information on art materials, techniques, and historical contexts as required.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and creative studio environment.
Required Skills
- Demonstrable passion for painting, sculpture, and the visual arts.
- Basic understanding of art materials and techniques.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently when necessary.
- Proactive attitude and eagerness to learn new skills.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Physical dexterity to handle art materials and studio equipment safely.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an art, art history, fine arts, or related program.
- Previous experience (even personal projects) with painting or sculptural media.
- A foundational portfolio demonstrating artistic interest or ability.
- Familiarity with health and safety protocols in a studio environment.
