Job Description

Tucson Unified School District is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Percussion Specialist to join our high school marching band program. This role is pivotal in developing and refining the percussion section’s technical proficiency, musicality, and performance quality for competitive marching band and other school ensembles. The Percussion Specialist will work under the direction of the Band Director, focusing on both front ensemble and battery percussion, to create an outstanding and cohesive percussion sound. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced percussionist with a passion for music education and inspiring young musicians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive percussion curriculum for high school marching band, encompassing both battery and front ensemble.
  • Provide expert instruction in all areas of percussion, including technique, rhythm, rudiments, sight-reading, and ensemble performance.
  • Rehearse and coach students individually and in sectionals to prepare for rehearsals, performances, and competitions.
  • Collaborate with the Band Director to integrate percussion parts seamlessly into the overall band sound and visual presentation.
  • Assist with music selection, arranging, and cleaning of percussion parts.
  • Maintain and organize percussion instruments and equipment.
  • Attend all marching band rehearsals, performances, and competitions, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Foster a positive, disciplined, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Percussion Performance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching and/or performing in a high school or collegiate marching band percussion section.
  • Exceptional proficiency on a wide range of percussion instruments (snare drum, tenor drums, bass drums, cymbals, mallets, timpani, auxiliary percussion).
  • Strong understanding of marching band techniques, drills, and show design pertinent to percussion.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate students of varying skill levels.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a larger instructional team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Music Education or Percussion Performance.
  • Arizona Department of Education teaching certification, or ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with competitive marching band circuits (e.g., WGI, DCI, BOA).
  • Proficiency in music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale).
  • Experience in arranging or composing percussion parts.
