Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Public Cemetery Groundskeeper to join our team in Accrington. This respectful outdoor role is crucial in maintaining the dignity and beauty of our public cemeteries. You will be responsible for the general upkeep and presentation of the grounds, ensuring a peaceful and well-maintained environment for visitors. This role requires a sensitive approach, a strong work ethic, and the ability to perform physical tasks in various weather conditions. Key Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and leaf blowing.
- Maintain grave sites, ensuring they are tidy and presentable.
- Plant and care for flowers, shrubs, and trees within the cemetery grounds.
- Operate various hand tools and light machinery safely and efficiently.
- Assist with digging and backfilling of graves, under supervision and with due sensitivity.
- Maintain pathways, roads, and drainage systems within the cemetery.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order and stored appropriately.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations at all times, particularly when working with machinery or near hazardous materials.
- Interact with members of the public in a polite and compassionate manner.
- Report any damage or maintenance issues promptly to the supervisor.
Required Skills
- Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of presentation.
- Respectful and sensitive demeanor, especially when interacting with bereaved families.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
- Basic knowledge of gardening and groundskeeping techniques.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Understanding of health and safety procedures related to grounds maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in groundskeeping, horticulture, or a similar outdoor role.
- Experience operating gardening machinery (e.g., mowers, strimmers).
- Full UK driving license.
- NVQ Level 1 or 2 in Horticulture or Amenity Horticulture.
