Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and safety-conscious Medical Gas Cylinder Porter to join our dedicated team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In this stable and crucial role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient transport, storage, and management of medical gas cylinders across our hospital sites. Full safety training will be provided to ensure you are confident and competent in all aspects of your duties. This position requires physical fitness, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to upholding the highest safety standards to support the continuous delivery of patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport medical gas cylinders, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, and medical air, to various wards and departments across the hospital premises.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels of medical gases, ensuring availability for clinical use and managing cylinder rotations.
  • Conduct regular checks on medical gas cylinders for damage, leaks, and correct labelling, reporting any issues promptly.
  • Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, health and safety regulations, and national guidelines related to the handling and storage of medical gases.
  • Operate and maintain manual handling equipment, such as cylinder trolleys, safely and efficiently.
  • Liaise effectively with clinical staff and other departments regarding gas supply and delivery schedules.
  • Accurately record cylinder movements and inventory data as required.
  • Participate in mandatory safety training and continuous professional development programs.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving heavy cylinders, with appropriate aids.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety procedures and protocols.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand labels, records, and instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a portering, logistics, or similar role within a healthcare or industrial setting.
  • Valid manual handling certification.
  • Knowledge of medical gas cylinder types and associated safety precautions (training will be provided).
