Job Description
We are seeking a highly specialized Pinterest Digital Archivist with a strong focus on historical data to join our innovative team in Center City, Philadelphia. This unique role at Google involves applying advanced digital archiving principles to vast datasets, specifically those akin to the dynamic and visually rich content found on platforms like Pinterest. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing strategies for the long-term preservation, access, and discoverability of our historical digital assets, ensuring their integrity and availability for research, development, and cultural insights. This role demands a deep understanding of digital preservation methodologies, metadata standards, and the challenges associated with archiving complex, evolving digital environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive digital preservation strategies for diverse historical digital assets, with an emphasis on visually-oriented and user-generated content.
- Manage the entire lifecycle of digital archives, including ingest, storage, metadata creation, access, and long-term sustainability.
- Implement and maintain robust metadata schemas (e.g., Dublin Core, PREMIS, MODS) to ensure accurate description and discoverability of archived materials.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate archiving solutions into existing platforms and workflows.
- Conduct regular audits and integrity checks on digital collections to mitigate risks of data loss or corruption.
- Research and recommend emerging technologies and best practices in digital archiving and preservation.
- Provide expert guidance on intellectual property rights, data privacy, and ethical considerations pertaining to digital archives.
- Train and support internal teams on best practices for digital asset management and preservation.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in digital archiving, preservation, or digital asset management, with a focus on large-scale datasets.
- Strong understanding of digital preservation standards, models (e.g., OAIS), and file formats.
- Expertise in metadata schema development and application (e.g., Dublin Core, PREMIS).
- Familiarity with various Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems and content management platforms.
- Experience with data migration, storage solutions, and cloud-based archiving.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Archival Studies, Library and Information Science, or a related field with a specialization in digital preservation.
- Experience with archiving social media content, user-generated data, or large visual databases.
- Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, R) for data analysis and automation.
- Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to digital content and intellectual property.
- Familiarity with machine learning applications for metadata extraction or content analysis in archives.
