Job Description

As a Senior Materials Chemist at RTX, you will be a pivotal member of our research and development team, driving the innovation and creation of next-generation materials for cutting-edge aerospace and defense applications. This role focuses on the entire lifecycle of materials, from initial concept and synthesis to characterization, testing, and scaling up for prototype development. You will leverage your deep expertise in material science and chemistry to solve complex challenges, optimize material properties, and ensure performance meets rigorous industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel materials for advanced prototypes.
  • Develop and implement innovative experimental methodologies for material evaluation and testing.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including engineers, physicists, and manufacturing specialists, to integrate new materials into product designs.
  • Conduct comprehensive failure analysis and root cause investigations for material-related issues.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and patent applications.
  • Mentor junior chemists and contribute to a culture of scientific excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and quality standards.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in materials synthesis, characterization, and prototype development.
  • Proven expertise with analytical techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, DSC, TGA.
  • Strong understanding of structure-property relationships in various material classes (e.g., polymers, composites, ceramics, metals).
  • Experience with material processing and fabrication techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the aerospace, defense, or high-tech manufacturing industries.
  • Familiarity with materials modeling and simulation software.
  • Track record of successful patent applications or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience with design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance.
