Job Description
Join AECOM’s dedicated team supporting the Army Corps of Engineers in a crucial civilian role focused on paleontological resources. As a Paleo Support Specialist, you will play a vital part in protecting and managing significant fossil and geological resources impacted by federal projects across various sites. This role involves fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data management, and report preparation, ensuring compliance with federal regulations such as the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (PRPA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). You will collaborate with archaeologists, environmental scientists, and engineers to integrate paleontological considerations into project planning and execution, contributing to responsible land stewardship and cultural resource preservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological field surveys, reconnaissance, and monitoring during ground-disturbing activities.
- Identify, document, collect, and curate fossil specimens in accordance with professional standards and federal guidelines.
- Perform preliminary laboratory analysis, fossil preparation, and data entry.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, site forms, and permit applications related to paleontological resources.
- Collaborate with project managers, environmental specialists, and Army Corps of Engineers personnel.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to paleontological resources.
- Maintain detailed records of fieldwork, laboratory work, and collections data.
- Participate in project planning meetings and contribute to mitigation strategies for resource protection.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork or cultural resource management.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and document fossil remains from various geological periods.
- Proficiency in field survey techniques, mapping (GIS experience preferred), and data collection methods.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Ability to work effectively in challenging outdoor environments and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or a closely related discipline.
- Experience working on federal or state agency projects (e.g., USACE, NPS, BLM).
- Familiarity with PRPA, NEPA, NHPA, and other relevant environmental regulations.
- Experience with fossil preparation and conservation techniques.
- Certification in First Aid/CPR.
