Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Hazardous Materials Chemist with a strong focus on safety and compliance to join our team in Sandy, Utah. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in strict accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. You will play a key part in developing and implementing safety protocols, conducting material analysis, and maintaining comprehensive compliance documentation to uphold Clean Harbors’ unwavering commitment to environmental protection and workplace safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct chemical analysis of incoming hazardous materials to determine composition, properties, and proper handling procedures.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all applicable environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations, including EPA, OSHA, DOT, and local ordinances.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety data sheets (SDS) and other hazard communication documents.
  • Oversee the proper segregation, labeling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste streams.
  • Perform regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Provide technical expertise and training to operations personnel on hazardous materials handling, emergency response, and safety procedures.
  • Assist in the investigation of incidents involving hazardous materials, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports to relevant authorities as required.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (operations, logistics, EHS) to optimize hazardous materials management processes.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all hazardous materials activities, including manifests, permits, and training.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in hazardous waste management, chemical analysis, or environmental compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA, DOT, OSHA).
  • Strong understanding of chemical properties, reactivity, and toxicology.
  • Proficiency in laboratory analytical techniques and instrumentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • DOT hazardous materials transportation training.
  • Experience with environmental management information systems (EMIS) or waste tracking software.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., CHMM, CSP).
