Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Library Page to join our team on a part-time basis. This role is crucial for maintaining the organization and accessibility of our extensive physical collections. The successful candidate will primarily focus on accurately shelving books and other library materials, ensuring a quiet and orderly environment, and supporting the overall flow of library resources. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in a focused, independent work setting and have a strong commitment to precision and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately shelve books, periodicals, and other library materials according to classification systems (e.g., Library of Congress).
- Maintain the neatness and order of shelves, ensuring materials are in their correct sequence.
- Conduct shelf reading to identify and correct mis-shelved items.
- Shift materials on shelves to accommodate collection growth and improve accessibility.
- Retrieve requested items from shelves for patrons or library staff as needed.
- Assist with basic collection maintenance tasks, such as cleaning materials or preparing items for repair.
- Follow all library policies and procedures, especially those related to material handling and patron service.
- Contribute to a quiet and productive library environment.
Required Skills
- Ability to read and comprehend English text, including complex alphanumeric sequences.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs, push loaded book carts weighing up to 100 lbs, bend, stoop, and reach for extended periods.
- Basic organizational and time management skills.
- Reliability and punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (or currently enrolled in high school/college).
- Previous experience working in a library, bookstore, or other environment requiring detailed organization.
- Familiarity with the Library of Congress Classification system.
- A genuine interest in books and information organization.
