Job Description
Are you a Registered Nurse seeking a fulfilling role with a predictable schedule and a focus on preventative care rather than emergency response? The American Red Cross is looking for a dedicated and compassionate Blood Donor Room Nurse to join our team in Baltimore, MD. In this vital role, you will be instrumental in ensuring a safe and comfortable donation experience for our generous blood donors. This position offers steady work, a supportive environment, and the profound satisfaction of knowing your efforts directly contribute to saving lives without the high-stress, unpredictable nature of an emergency room or acute care setting. You will primarily focus on donor screening, phlebotomy, and post-donation care, working closely with a skilled team to maintain the highest standards of safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough donor screenings, including medical history review and physical assessments, to ensure donor eligibility and safety.
- Perform accurate and safe venipuncture (phlebotomy) for blood collection from donors.
- Monitor donors during the donation process for adverse reactions and provide immediate care as needed.
- Educate donors on the donation process, post-donation care, and the importance of their contribution.
- Maintain accurate and detailed donor records, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
- Adhere to all American Red Cross standard operating procedures, policies, and FDA regulations.
- Ensure a clean, organized, and safe donor room environment.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient donor flow and a positive donation experience.
Required Skills
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Maryland
- Minimum of 1 year of professional nursing experience
- Proficient phlebotomy skills, with experience in venipuncture
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a compassionate approach to patient/donor care
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a blood collection center or with therapeutic phlebotomy
- Previous experience working in a non-profit or humanitarian organization
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
