Job Description
Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts is seeking enthusiastic and qualified Adjunct Music Faculty to join our dynamic team on a part-time, flexible basis. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the education and development of aspiring musicians and artists. As an Adjunct Faculty member, you will deliver high-quality instruction in music theory, history, performance, or specific instrument/vocal techniques, depending on departmental needs and your area of expertise. We are looking for passionate educators who can inspire and challenge students while fostering a supportive and engaging classroom or studio environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging course content, including lectures, practical demonstrations, and individual instruction, aligning with departmental curriculum.
- Evaluate student performance through assignments, exams, projects, and recitals, providing constructive feedback.
- Maintain scheduled office hours or equivalent availability for student consultation and support.
- Participate in departmental meetings and activities as required, contributing to program development and student success initiatives.
- Stay current with best practices in music pedagogy and relevant advancements in the field of music.
- Adhere to university and departmental policies and procedures regarding attendance, grading, and student conduct.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Music or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated expertise and professional experience in a specific area of music (e.g., performance, composition, musicology, music theory).
- Proven ability to teach effectively at the college level, with strong pedagogical skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and colleagues.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate (DMA, Ph.D., Ed.D.) in Music or a related discipline.
- Prior experience teaching at a university or college level as an adjunct or full-time faculty member.
- Experience with various instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
- Professional performance, publication, or composition credits.
- Ability to teach across multiple sub-disciplines within music.
