Job Description

We are seeking a meticulous and enthusiastic Coastal Paleontology Sorter with a specific focus on marine fossils to join our dedicated collections team. This role is crucial for the initial processing and organization of recently excavated and donated marine fossil specimens. The successful candidate will be responsible for the careful sorting, cleaning, and preliminary identification of fossils, ensuring their proper placement within our extensive collections. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about paleontology to contribute directly to scientific discovery and preservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carefully sort and categorize marine fossil specimens based on established paleontological protocols.
  • Perform initial cleaning and basic preparation of fossil materials, ensuring minimal damage.
  • Assist in the preliminary identification and labeling of specimens under the guidance of senior paleontologists.
  • Maintain accurate records of all processed specimens, including collection data, condition reports, and inventory updates.
  • Assist with the organization and proper storage of fossil collections within the museum's facility.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and best practices for handling delicate scientific specimens.
  • Collaborate with other collections staff and researchers on various projects as needed.

Required Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for handling fragile specimens.
  • Basic understanding of geological and paleontological principles.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Physical ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
  • Proficiency with basic data entry and spreadsheet software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Biology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working with natural history collections or in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with marine fossil types and common coastal geology.
  • Experience with fossil preparation techniques (e.g., air scribes, consolidants).
