Job Description
Join National Geographic Expeditions as a Fossil Hunt Instructor, leading exclusive private adventure tours in the Tulsa, Oklahoma region. In this exciting role, you will guide small groups and individuals on enriching expeditions to discover and identify fossils, providing expert instruction on paleontology, geology, and local ecosystems. This position requires a passionate educator with a strong background in Earth sciences, excellent outdoor leadership skills, and a commitment to delivering exceptional, safe, and memorable experiences for our discerning clientele.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead private, guided fossil hunting expeditions for individuals and small groups.
- Educate participants on paleontological principles, geological formations, and the history of life on Earth relevant to the region.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by adhering to strict safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Assist participants in the identification, documentation, and ethical collection (where permitted) of fossil specimens.
- Maintain expedition equipment, tools, and supplies, ensuring they are in excellent working condition.
- Provide outstanding customer service, adapting tours to meet the diverse interests and abilities of clients.
- Conduct pre-trip briefings and post-trip debriefings, sharing insights and findings with participants.
- Stay current with best practices in paleontology, geology, and outdoor guiding.
Required Skills
- In-depth knowledge of paleontology, geology, and stratigraphy, particularly in North America.
- Proven experience in outdoor guiding, instruction, or experiential education.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and educate diverse audiences.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and decision-making skills in dynamic outdoor environments.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, dedicated team.
- Physical fitness to lead demanding outdoor activities, including hiking over uneven terrain and carrying equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Geology, Paleontology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- Previous experience leading private or VIP adventure tours.
- Familiarity with the specific fossil localities and geological history of Oklahoma and surrounding regions.
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness EMT (WEMT) certification.
- Experience with GPS navigation and map reading.
