Job Description

Are you passionate about making a profound impact through the world of canine companionship? National Service Dogs is seeking a motivated and compassionate Canine Service Dog Training Intern to join our dedicated team. This hands-on internship offers a unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the specialized field of service dog training, working alongside certified professionals. You will contribute to the development of highly skilled assistance dogs, learning foundational training techniques, animal husbandry, and client support. This role is perfect for individuals eager to embark on a rewarding career in animal care, training, or non-profit service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior trainers in daily training sessions for service dogs, including basic obedience and advanced task-specific skills.
  • Participate in the daily care and exercise routines of service dogs in training, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being.
  • Learn and apply positive reinforcement training methodologies and canine behavior management techniques.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of dog progress, behavior, and daily activities.
  • Prepare and maintain clean, safe, and organized training environments and kennel areas.
  • Observe and assist with client-dog team training sessions, understanding the application of service dogs in real-world scenarios.
  • Support the general operations of the training facility as needed, contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Required Skills

  • A genuine passion for animals and their welfare.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform duties that require standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and handling dogs of various sizes in all weather conditions.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry and record-keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or a graduate of an animal science, veterinary technician, animal behavior, or professional dog training program.
  • Previous volunteer or work experience with animals, particularly dogs, in a professional or shelter setting.
  • Basic understanding of canine body language and behavior.
  • Certification in Pet First Aid and CPR.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
