Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Google Digital Archivist with a strong focus on historical data to join our remote team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the long-term preservation, organization, and accessibility of Google’s vast and complex historical digital assets. This includes identifying, acquiring, cataloging, preserving, and providing access to digital materials of enduring value. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of archival principles, digital preservation strategies, metadata standards, and a passion for safeguarding digital heritage. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to contribute from anywhere within the United States.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive digital preservation strategies for historical data, ensuring long-term integrity and accessibility.
- Perform metadata creation, standardization, and quality control for digital assets, adhering to relevant archival and industry standards (e.g., Dublin Core, PREMIS).
- Identify, appraise, and acquire digital historical records from various Google teams and platforms.
- Manage the ingest, storage, and retrieval of digital archival materials within secure repository systems.
- Conduct regular audits and integrity checks on digital collections to prevent data loss or corruption.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate archival best practices into new data generation and management systems.
- Provide expert guidance on digital asset management and preservation to internal stakeholders.
- Research and evaluate new technologies and methodologies for digital archiving and preservation.
- Assist in responding to research inquiries and providing access to historical digital materials while maintaining privacy and security protocols.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in digital archiving, library science, or information management, with a focus on historical or complex datasets.
- Strong understanding of digital preservation principles, standards (e.g., OAIS, PREMIS), and best practices.
- Proficiency with metadata standards and controlled vocabularies.
- Experience with digital asset management systems (DAMS) or archival management software.
- Familiarity with various data formats and their long-term preservation challenges.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library Science (MLS), Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
- Experience with large-scale data storage solutions and cloud platforms (GCP preferred).
- Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python) for data manipulation and automation.
- Familiarity with intellectual property rights and data privacy regulations.
- Certification in digital preservation or archival management.
