Job Description
Landstar System Inc. is seeking dedicated and experienced individuals for the role of Oversize Load Pilot Driver – Escort Vehicle. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to manage your escort duties from various locations as required by specific projects. As a critical member of our specialized transportation team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of oversized and overweight loads by providing professional escort services. Your primary duty will be to alert the public and other motorists to the presence of an oversize load, manage traffic flow, and communicate effectively with the load driver to navigate challenging routes. This role demands exceptional situational awareness, adherence to all traffic laws and state regulations, and a commitment to safety above all else.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate an escort vehicle safely and professionally in front of or behind oversized loads.
- Maintain constant communication with the oversized load driver and other pilot vehicles.
- Control traffic and ensure safe passage of the oversized load through various terrains and conditions.
- Identify and mitigate potential hazards along the route, including low clearances, narrow bridges, and congested areas.
- Adhere strictly to all state and federal regulations concerning oversize load escorts, including flagging, lighting, and signage requirements.
- Complete necessary paperwork and trip logs accurately.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle and equipment.
- Represent Landstar System Inc. with professionalism and a commitment to safety.
Required Skills
- Valid Class D or higher driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Proven experience as an escort vehicle driver for oversized loads.
- Thorough knowledge of state and and federal regulations pertaining to oversize load transportation and pilot vehicle operations.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong observational skills and spatial awareness.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with GPS and mapping software.
- Ability to handle unexpected situations calmly and effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- CDL Class A or B endorsement.
- Certification in specific state pilot/escort vehicle programs.
- Experience with various types of heavy haul and specialized transport projects.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vehicle maintenance during trips.
