Job Description

Are you eager to start a career in the culinary world? MGM Grand Detroit is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Kitchen Assistant to join our award-winning culinary team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals with little to no prior kitchen experience who are keen to learn the fundamentals of food preparation, kitchen operations, and culinary excellence. You’ll work alongside experienced chefs, gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment. We offer weekly pay and a supportive team culture designed to help you build a strong foundation for your culinary journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist chefs and cooks with basic food preparation, including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, including washing dishes, sanitizing workstations, and sweeping/mopping floors.
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is clean, stored properly, and in good working condition.
  • Assist with receiving and storing deliveries, ensuring proper rotation of stock (FIFO).
  • Support the culinary team during service by ensuring all necessary items are stocked and readily available.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and hygiene standards and regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
  • Learn and apply basic culinary techniques and practices under supervision.

Required Skills

  • Willingness to learn and a strong desire to pursue a career in culinary arts.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of kitchen operations or food safety (e.g., ServeSafe certification) is a plus, but not required.
  • Previous experience in a customer service or hospitality role.
