Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented State/Provincial Highway Patrol Dispatcher to join our team for night shifts. In this critical role, you will be the primary communication link between the public and our highway patrol units, operating in a fast-paced environment where quick thinking and calm under pressure are paramount. You will handle emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch patrol units, and maintain accurate records, all while ensuring the safety of both the public and our officers during the challenging night hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and evaluate emergency and non-emergency calls for service, determining the nature and location of incidents.
- Prioritize calls and dispatch appropriate highway patrol units and other emergency services efficiently.
- Maintain constant radio contact with patrol units, providing essential information and support.
- Operate complex communication systems, including computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, radios, and multi-line telephones.
- Accurately log all calls, dispatches, and activities, ensuring detailed record-keeping.
- Monitor multiple information sources, including CCTV and alarm systems, during night shifts.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers in emergency situations as needed.
- Relay critical information to other law enforcement agencies and emergency services.
- Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion.
Required Skills
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to multi-task effectively in high-stress situations.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Proficiency in computer operation and data entry.
- Excellent listening and comprehension skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team during night hours.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as an emergency dispatcher or in a similar public safety role.
- Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology and procedures.
- Experience with Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
