Job Description
The Google Summer Trainee Engineering Program (STEP) is a paid, 10-12 week internship for first and second-year university students from groups historically underrepresented in tech. This program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in software engineering, working on impactful projects under the guidance of a dedicated Google mentor. You will develop critical technical skills, learn best practices in software development, and immerse yourself in Google’s innovative culture. The STEP program is designed to provide professional development, mentorship, and a strong sense of community, preparing you for future careers in technology. This specific role is based in our London office, offering a vibrant and diverse work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a team of Google engineers on a challenging and impactful software project.
- Write, test, and maintain high-quality code in various programming languages.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and sprint planning meetings.
- Learn and apply new technologies, tools, and development methodologies.
- Document project progress, solutions, and best practices.
- Contribute to the overall team success and foster an inclusive work environment.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Completed first or second year of university studies by summer 2024.
- Foundational knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Go).
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking.
- Authorization to work in the UK for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with full stack development, mobile development, or machine learning frameworks.
- Prior project experience (academic, personal, or open-source contributions).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
