Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Paleo Support Specialist to join our environmental team in Boston, MA. This civilian role will provide critical paleontological and paleoenvironmental support for various projects overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The successful candidate will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with federal environmental regulations related to paleontological resources, conducting fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and contributing to comprehensive project documentation. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological field surveys, resource identification, and data collection in various project areas.
- Perform laboratory analysis of paleontological samples, including fossil preparation, identification, and curation.
- Prepare technical reports, cultural resources management plans, and environmental compliance documents (e.g., NEPA, NHPA Section 106) with a focus on paleontological resources.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including archaeologists, biologists, engineers, and project managers.
- Ensure project activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to paleontological resources.
- Assist in developing scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals for paleo-related tasks.
- Manage and maintain paleontological collections and associated databases.
- Provide expert consultation and support during agency consultations and public meetings.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in paleontological fieldwork and laboratory methods.
- Proficiency in fossil identification, preparation, and curation techniques.
- Strong understanding of federal environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA) as they pertain to paleontological resources.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills for report generation and presentations.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Proficiency with GIS software for mapping and data management.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Prior experience working on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects.
- Familiarity with state-specific paleontological resource management guidelines in the Northeast.
- Experience with remote sensing technologies for resource identification.
- Professional certification (e.g., Registered Professional Paleontologist, RPA certification if applicable).
