Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Zoology & Animal Husbandry Intern to join our team, focusing specifically on zoo enclosures. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the daily care and management of diverse animal species within a professional zoo environment. You will work alongside experienced zookeepers and animal care specialists, contributing to the health, well-being, and enrichment of our animals. This is a vital learning experience for individuals aspiring to a career in zoology, animal science, or wildlife conservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist zookeepers with daily animal husbandry tasks, including feeding, watering, and cleaning enclosures.
  • Participate in the observation and documentation of animal behavior and health.
  • Aid in the preparation and delivery of environmental enrichment items to stimulate natural behaviors.
  • Support the maintenance and upkeep of animal habitats and service areas, ensuring safety and cleanliness.
  • Learn and adhere to all zoo safety protocols, animal handling procedures, and welfare guidelines.
  • Assist with exhibit improvements and modifications under supervision.
  • Contribute to data collection for animal records and research projects.
  • Engage in educational activities and visitor interaction as opportunities arise.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field.
  • Strong passion for animal welfare and conservation.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions (lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing for long periods).
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or paid experience in an animal care setting (e.g., zoo, aquarium, sanctuary, farm).
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and natural history.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with operant conditioning or animal training techniques.
  • Familiarity with wildlife rehabilitation practices.
