Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced BLM Paleontologist (Civilian Support) to join our team in Phoenix, AZ. This critical role involves providing expert paleontological support for various federal contracts, primarily with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting paleontological field surveys, preparing specimens, analyzing findings, and contributing to comprehensive technical reports. This position requires strong adherence to federal regulations and guidelines, meticulous data management, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological surveys and inventories in compliance with federal guidelines (e.g., BLM Manual Section 8270).
- Identify, document, and collect fossil specimens from various geological contexts.
- Perform basic preparation and conservation of collected fossil materials.
- Manage paleontological data, including detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS coordinates.
- Prepare technical reports, impact assessments, and mitigation plans related to paleontological resources.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local environmental and cultural resource regulations.
- Collaborate with project managers, archaeologists, geologists, and other specialists.
- Provide scientific input and recommendations for project planning and execution.
- Participate in stakeholder meetings and present findings as required.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in paleontology, preferably within a federal contracting environment.
- Demonstrated experience with BLM paleontological resource management policies and procedures.
- Proficiency in conducting paleontological field surveys and fossil identification.
- Strong understanding of stratigraphy and geological principles.
- Experience with GPS/GIS for data collection and mapping.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in remote field settings and adverse weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, or a closely related field.
- Experience with fossil preparation laboratory techniques.
- Knowledge of environmental impact assessment processes (NEPA, NHPA Section 106).
- OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification.
- Familiarity with specific regional paleontology (e.g., Southwestern US).
