Job Description
Join the DeSerres team as a Bookbinding & Paper Arts Intern and immerse yourself in the world of traditional and contemporary paper crafts. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in various bookbinding techniques, paper manipulation, and preservation under the guidance of experienced artisans. You will assist with diverse projects, contribute to creative initiatives, and learn about the materials and tools essential to the craft. This role is perfect for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for tactile artistry and a desire to develop their skills in a dynamic retail and creative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of materials for bookbinding and paper art projects, including cutting, folding, and gluing.
- Learn and apply various bookbinding techniques, such as saddle stitch, perfect binding, Japanese binding, and Coptic binding.
- Support the design and creation of custom paper products, journals, and artistic installations.
- Handle and organize a wide range of papers, fabrics, and adhesives, ensuring proper storage and inventory.
- Contribute to the setup and cleanup of workshops and creative spaces.
- Research and explore new techniques and materials in bookbinding and paper arts.
- Assist with quality control and finishing touches on completed pieces.
- Document processes and create instructional guides for internal use.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of paper properties and handling.
- Strong attention to detail and precision in craftwork.
- Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Eagerness to learn and take initiative.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in fine arts, graphic design, crafts, or a related field.
- Prior experience with basic bookbinding, origami, paper sculpture, or other paper crafts.
- Familiarity with historical book structures and conservation principles.
