Job Description
We are seeking a talented and dedicated Church Organist / Music Director to lead our weekend worship services and assist with other special liturgical events. This stable weekend role is perfect for a skilled musician with a deep appreciation for sacred music and a desire to contribute meaningfully to our faith community. The ideal candidate will possess strong organ performance skills, experience in directing choirs, and a collaborative spirit to work with our clergy and volunteers.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as principal organist for all weekend Masses (typically Saturday evening and multiple Sunday Masses) and other special services (e.g., Holy Days, Sacraments).
- Direct and rehearse adult and/or children's choirs, fostering musical growth and spiritual engagement.
- Select appropriate hymns and service music in collaboration with the Pastor or Liturgy Coordinator, adhering to liturgical guidelines.
- Plan and organize music for major liturgical seasons and events, including Christmas, Easter, and other solemnities.
- Maintain the church's musical instruments, ensuring they are in good working order and scheduling necessary tuning or repairs.
- Recruit, train, and mentor volunteer musicians and cantors.
- Attend weekly staff meetings as required and participate in liturgical planning sessions.
- Oversee the music budget and resources.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in organ performance, including improvisation and varied repertoire.
- Strong vocal and instrumental conducting skills.
- Extensive knowledge of Catholic liturgy and sacred music traditions.
- Ability to read music and accompany various vocal ranges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organizational skills for planning rehearsals and services.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music, Sacred Music, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience as a Church Organist or Music Director in a Catholic parish.
- Experience with different styles of sacred music.
- Proficiency with other instruments (e.g., piano, guitar) is a plus.
- Familiarity with music software for notation or arrangement.
