Job Description

AECOM is seeking a dedicated and experienced Desert Paleontology Monitor to join our environmental team for projects across Utah and Nevada. This crucial role involves field monitoring during ground-disturbing activities to identify, protect, and document paleontological resources in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of fossil identification, stratigraphic principles, and fieldwork methodologies within arid and semi-arid environments. This position offers a high hourly rate for qualified individuals passionate about preserving our natural heritage. The work primarily occurs outdoors in challenging desert conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological monitoring during excavation and construction activities in Utah and Nevada.
  • Identify, document, and recover paleontological resources (fossils) in the field.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all findings.
  • Prepare and submit daily field reports to project managers and clients.
  • Communicate effectively with construction crews, project personnel, and agency representatives regarding paleontological concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and project-specific Paleontological Resource Management Plans.
  • Assist with fossil preparation, conservation, and curation as needed.
  • Implement safety protocols and procedures in all field operations.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in paleontological fieldwork and monitoring.
  • Strong knowledge of Cenozoic and Mesozoic stratigraphy and fossil identification pertinent to the Great Basin region.
  • Ability to work independently in remote, rugged desert environments for extended periods.
  • Proficiency with GPS devices, digital photography, and field data collection software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding fieldwork, including lifting up to 50 lbs, hiking, and working in extreme weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience working on projects subject to NEPA, BLM, or other federal/state environmental regulations.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • OSHA 10 or 30-hour construction safety certification.
