Job Description
Arlington Public Schools is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Special Education to lead and enhance our services for students with disabilities. This critical leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of special education programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and fostering an inclusive environment where every student can thrive. The Director will provide strategic vision, instructional leadership, and administrative oversight to ensure high-quality, individualized support for students, while also supporting and developing a team of dedicated special education professionals. This position requires a visionary leader with a deep commitment to equity, student advocacy, and collaborative partnerships with families and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all special education programs and services across the school division.
- Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to special education (IDEA, ADA, etc.).
- Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive special education policies, procedures, and instructional practices.
- Lead, supervise, and evaluate special education administrators, supervisors, and support staff.
- Manage the special education budget, including federal and state grants, ensuring fiscal responsibility and effective resource allocation.
- Collaborate with school principals, general education leaders, and other departments to promote inclusive practices and integrated services.
- Facilitate professional development for special education and general education staff on best practices, legal updates, and instructional strategies.
- Oversee the development and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and other student support plans.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for parents/guardians regarding special education concerns and ensure effective communication and partnership.
- Analyze data to identify program strengths, areas for improvement, and inform strategic decision-making.
- Advocate for the needs of students with disabilities and promote a culture of high expectations and support.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field.
- Valid Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Special Education Administration or eligibility for one.
- Minimum of five years of successful experience in special education administration or leadership roles.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Strong leadership, supervisory, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage budgets and resources effectively.
- Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field.
- Experience working in a diverse, urban or suburban school district.
- Bilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish.
- Experience securing and managing grant funding for special education initiatives.
- Demonstrated success in fostering collaborative relationships with families, staff, and community partners.
