Job Description
Join Stantec’s Environmental Services team as a Field Paleo Worker, contributing to critical paleontological resource management projects. This role involves hands-on fieldwork, working outdoors in various conditions to survey, excavate, and document significant fossil discoveries. You will work under the guidance of experienced paleontologists, playing a vital role in the preservation of our natural heritage. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about geology and ancient life, offering the chance to work on impactful projects with daily per diem and housing provided during field assignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct systematic paleontological surveys and monitoring during ground-disturbing activities.
- Perform excavation, collection, and stabilization of fossil specimens according to established protocols.
- Maintain detailed field notes, maps, and photographic records of all finds and site conditions.
- Assist with the setup, maintenance, and breakdown of field equipment and camp logistics.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, project-specific safety plans, and regulatory guidelines.
- Collaborate effectively with project managers, senior paleontologists, and other field team members.
- Transport collected samples and equipment between field sites and storage facilities.
- Participate in post-field processing and preliminary identification of collected materials as needed.
Required Skills
- Physical fitness and stamina for demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to hike long distances, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions for data recording and specimen handling.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Basic understanding of geological concepts or willingness to learn quickly.
- Commitment to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or coursework in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, Biology, or a related scientific field.
- Previous field experience in paleontology, archaeology, geology, or environmental monitoring.
- Experience with GPS units, field mapping tools, and digital data collection.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of regional geology and fossil taxa.
- Ability to identify common rock types and sedimentary structures.
